How We Test

For our broker reviews of 2020, we assessed nearly 100 factors across a section of important groups. These groups include:

Commissions and fees

Research provided

Customer service

Platform and tools

Mobile trading

Education

Extra services

Commissions and fees, and customer service were tested by us. We needed to test them ourselves due to the necessity to get the facts straight. They are both complex factors and required us to see it for ourselves before making a comment.

The rest of our testing factors are also vigorously tested by us, but we noticed that they were much more opinion-based and so have been scored from 1-10, 1 being very bad, and 10 being optimal. We also make sure to note any extra services provided by the broker.

Commissions and fees

Brokers will show their spreads and fees on their websites, but we go the extra mile to ensure validity in our tests, so we log in for ourselves and check the difference between bid and ask prices live. We then create an average for the broker and compare them to their competitors. In this scenario, the cheaper the better, so we award higher points for brokers with a lower average price relative to the competition.

To simplify matters further, we check all individual account types and other miscellaneous account fees over time or active trader or VIP benefits for each broker. We then round this to a net ‘cost per trade’ so that we can give you an all-round view for each platform.

Customer service

Customer service is tested through not only checking user experiences, but going in ourselves. We asked each broker around 3 separate questions to their customer services of varying degrees. From this, we could assess the speed of response and connection to the support representative, professionalism, friendliness, and the speed and thoroughness of resolution.

For customer service tests, we have to separate the results into three sectors. We also give a net score for the overall experience with the support representative.

Once we have our results, we have to weigh them differently as some factors are more important than others. Response time accounts to 15% of our score, speed and thoroughness of resolution is 45%, professionalism and friendliness is 20%, and the overall experience net score is 20%.

Once each individual result has been measured, we create an overall customer service average for each broker.
